We cannot deny climate change any longer. Terrible storms are happening more frequently and are more severe in the damage they inflict on our communities. Trump and the GOP seek to eliminate the Flood Hazard Mapping Program that assesses potential risks and helps communities prioritize prevention measures. Data shows that $1 in prevention saves $4 in damage repair in the aftermath of a storm.
The Administration will also eliminate the National Flood Insurance Program. Eighty percent of households already do not have flood insurance and eliminating this program will only increase costs to tax payers. The Federal government must assure affordability of flood insurance to those who need it most.
Trump’s budget will reduce spending on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by $667 million, including grants and programs that help states and local municipalities with disaster preparedness. These funds have been reallocated to build the wall, a waste of tax payer resources that will not make us safer nor prevent people from coming in to the US.
I will fight to keep Hoosier families safe from natural disasters by assuring that federal resources are used for prevention and not just damage repair. This approach will not only be more cost-effective, but will save families from the emotional toll and financial devastation severe storms bring.
